Outlook

NLT makes applications to trusts, foundations and institutions. Individual supporters and the Friends of Lalgadh undertake fundraising events. Further fundraising could and should be developed to boost income growth. The running costs of LLSC are now around £350,000 per year. NLT provided some 65% of this budget in 2007. LLSC raises some funds locally through charges for non-leprosy medical treatment (at cost) and the hiring out of the training centre. It is developing its local fundraising applications capacity with help from NLT UK.

One foundation that has been a long-term supporter is considering whether to continue with its focus on leprosy or move to funding other sectors. If the funding were to stop, NLT would need to find £60,000/year to fill the gap. The Trust also needs to buy two new vehicles to support its community field work. The four-wheel drive vehicles are needed to transport POD workers to health posts, to transport supplies, and to reach awareness-raising venues in remote locations. However, the Nepali government’s car import taxes are 130%, raising the cost to around £25,000 each for the two vehicles. This is outside of the Trust’s current reach. The existing vehicles have been reengineered many times so far but are unlikely to last for much longer.
