Impact

Improving housing conditions for slum dwellers: It is not easy to imagine the type of conditions that slum dwellers constantly live in. But the effect of the benefit of improved housing must be dramatic. Sleeping securely, being able to keep valuables, and keeping out the elements would all be life changing. It would immediately improve living conditions and expand potential opportunities.

Improving access to clean water and sanitation: Reducing water-borne or faeces-related diseases will benefit slum dwellers health and reduce the likelihood of lower earnings and deaths.

Development of community groups: Influence on local authorities’ policies is far greater when applied by an organised group than by individuals. The pressures already brought, by the CLIFF Indian and Kenyan Alliances and the other community groups, has influenced decisions affecting thousands of slum dwelling families. Securing tenure and regularising land ownership is a major power shift which increases security, confidence, asset ownership, opportunities, and earnings potential.

Capacity building of local partners & community associations: Development of partner skills, management, monitoring, and accounting systems maximises the benefit to the target populations. These skills are then passed on to community groups to help boost the impact on members.

“I believe that the provision of sanitation for the urban poor is central to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (and) to the dignity of the urban poor, particularly to women. For these reasons, the programme to provide sanitation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is amongst my highest priorities.”

Ratnakar Gaikwad, Metropolitan Commissioner, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Agency

“My family are very excited, especially the children, to move into our new CLIFF home. We have been dreaming of a two-storey house. Hard work has really paid off.”
