Prospect Burma
Reasons for Rating

Prospect Burma provides university-level educational scholarships to students who are exiled or otherwise disadvantaged due to the limitations of education in Burma under the military regime.

• Preferred courses are those most likely to help restore the civil society in the long-term, such as teaching and teacher training, public health, development, and economics. The aim is to help build a qualified and talented core of people able to contribute to the improvement of Burmese society.

• Additional grants are given to support English-language schools and courses and teacher training for Burmese refugees on the Thai and Indian sides of the Burmese border. Some vocational training is also supported, such as tailloring and computer courses.

• Prospect Burma is supported by highly committed trustees and volunteers, with a passion for the charity’s mission.

• Because of the charity’s small size and good programme ratio, as well as the average grant size of ~£1,200, donors can make a direct, tangible contribution to the educational success of disadvantaged Burmese-origin students.

• Over 1,000 scholars have been able to study abroad due to the scholarships awarded.

• Should democracy be restored, the charity’s experience could be used within Burma to support the inevitable long-term educational and capacity recovery process.
