Pump Aid
Reasons for Rating

Pump Aid helps improve the quality of water and sanitation with cost-effective water pump and toilet systems.

• Some 800m people worldwide do not have access to clean water. Some 80% of illness in sub-Saharan Africa is believed to be due to water-borne causes.

• The Elephant Pump protects existing or new water sources from contamination. The Elephant Toilet technology is simple, appropriate and practical. The technology and Pump Aid’s approach could be replicated across Africa.

• The programme combines water, micro-irrigation, sanitation and nutrition gardens as a combined development solution to improve health and food supplies.

• The pump design is easy to maintan and repair locally. Many of the pumps are still in operation 10 years after installation. Each pump can provide 40 litres of water a day to 250 people.

• The cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe in 2008 highlights the poor infrastructure there and the urgent need for safe water and sanitation.

• Less time spent collecting water from distant sources increases chances for carrying out income generating activities and getting an education.

• Over 1,300 pumps were installed in 2008, improving water access for health and food for over 345,000 people.

• People without access to reliably clean water: Zimbabwe, 2.5m; Malawi, 3.5m.
