African Initiatives was established in 1995 in Ghana. Local organisations are partnered to become accountable to the community on area needs. The move into Tanzania developed out of consultancy on pastoralists’ rights.
In Tanzania, individuals cannot own land, which is the property of the government. Pastoralists’ traditional use has been undermined by conservation pressures. In Ghana, farmers are losing out to competitive pressures on agricultural trade. The FAO notes that farmers must intensify production to be competitive and improve livelihoods. This requires better decision making and management skills. In both countries, women and girls face traditional and physical barriers and issues, undermining their status and potential economic contribution.
African Initiatives main distinction from other charities working in the same regions is its emphasis on community advocacy to drive regional and national change. Three of our recommended charities also work in Ghana (see Development Ratings reports on Tree Aid, Self Help Africa, and AfriKids).
