• Build Africa focusses on developing opportunities for young people in rural areas of Uganda and Kenya.
• Build Africa builds primary school infrastructure, supports school development plans and increases school accountability to parents. The charity works with local communities and governments to help children achieve a quality education.
• Build Africa also provides teenagers and young people with vocational training, mainly in the agriculture sector, as well as advice on market access and enterprise development. The charity provides starter loans. This helps them establish their own businesses to earn a living.
• Literacy rates are weak in the two countries, particularly amongst Ugandan women. Concentration on primary education is key to improving in this area.
• Improved school infrastructure and development plans increase the number of children completing primary school. In 2007, there was a 75% increase in pupils entered for exams after school buildings were constructed in one area.
• 250 young farmers have taken out revolving start-up loans to set up agricultural businesses. Most repaid the entire loan from the first year’s improved harvest.
• Over 25,000 people attended Build Africa’s HIV/AIDS and gender awareness projects in 2007. These projects are integral to Build Africa’s youth approach.
