Target Tubercolosis
Reasons for Rating

Target Tuberculosis has the aim of eradicating TB.

• To begin to achieve this, Target TB works to increase access to diagnosis and treatment, particulary for poor and marginalised people, to spread information about TB, and to address the socio-economic issues surrounding the disease.

• Someone in the world becomes infected with the TB bacillus every 3 seconds. Every 18 seconds, someone with TB dies. In 2006, 9.2m new cases occurred and 1.7m people died worldwide. This is over 4,500 people dying a day.

• More than 2 billion people globally are infected with the active or latent TB bacillus (WHO). An untreated person with active TB can infect 10-15 people/year.

• WHO data notes that the area with the largest number of new cases is South East Asia. The area with the greatest number of cases is sub-Saharan Africa. Africa accounts for 85% of estimated global HIV-positive TB cases.

• In 2008, 1,881 health workers were trained by Target TB’s partners to identify symptoms and refer patients for testing. 12,483 people were diagnosed and treated, saving them up to £1.4m in lost wages and debt costs.

• Every patient identified for ~£40 prevents transmission to new patients and saves up to £600 to identify up to 15 others. In 2007, 12 million people received health education on TB from Target TB’s partners at a cost per person of just 4p.
