The Asian Tsunami on Boxing Day 2004 resulted in a major sea change in the charity’s status and operations. 22,224 ShelterBoxes were sent in 2005. Subsequent years’ activity and income have been lower as activities are highly dependent on the emergencies that occur during any one year. Variable income is not a concern, as income and expenditure are largely matched, the Trust’s efficiency is high, and reserves are healthy. Costs may increase slightly, however, as the management team is strengthened to boost future capacity.

Emergencies dealt with in 2008: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Ecuador, Kenya, Mozambique, Nepal, Nicaragua, Somaliland and Zambia. Countries vary annually depending on the need.
In 2008, income was derived from the following sources: UK Rotary & Inner Wheel donations 21%, other worldwide Rotary Clubs 35%, public donations 34%, schools project 3%, Gift Aid 5%, and rental and other income 2%. 65% of income came from UK donors, down from 78% in 2007 as overseas Rotary Clubs contribute an increasing amount. Specific relationships are with Rotary in the United States, Australia, and Canada, and there are developing connections with Clubs in Germany, Southeast Asia, Denmark, Luxembourg, France and Italy.
The Trust has no overseas staff. Hundreds of volunteers provide support packing boxes, as SRT members, and giving fundraising talks. Local Rotarians helping with the emergency are also voluntary.
