• VETAID works where animals mean survival. It provides animal healthcare, vaccinations, replacement livestock animals, and training for rural communities in East Africa.
• Networks of local community animal health workers are trained. Agricultural projects, training & small business initiatives improve farmers’ food supply & income.
• Many rural communities rely on livestock for their livelihoods. Floods, drought and animal diseases can affect animal survival and increase poverty. Local VETAID staff and veterinarians treat animals and train individuals, communities, NGOs and government animal health workers.
• Examples of projects include providing sub-soil ploughs to make farming easier and more productive, developing income generating initiatives for people with HIV/AIDS, and establishing collective marketing associations to increase price negotiating power. Village Community Banks (VICOBAs) support local initiatives.
• The charity develops business ideas with communities, such as milk storage systems to ensure high standard dairy production, or the drying and preserving of vegetable products for dry season use and for sale.
• VETAID’s work benefits around 300,000 people a year at a cost of about £8 per person. 4m animals are also treated and cared for.
