AfriKids
Reasons for Rating

AfriKids works for the protection of child rights in Ghana. It cares for and supports the victims of child migration, child neglect and child labour. It also works to highlight, reduce, and prevent the causes of these.

• The local NGO, AfriKids Ghana, carries out a range of practical and tangible projects designed to protect and support vulnerable and disadvantaged children.

• Local projects develop opportunities for children to return to their families while educating communities and society about the dangers for and rights of children.

• AfriKids UK plans its own redundancy by at least 2018. With AfriKids Ghana, it is developing a range of local business projects to bring in revenue to allow AfriKids Ghana to be sustainable and independent in the longer-term.

• Projects include removing children from working in gold mines & re-training them for alternative work or returning them to school, housing & caring for disabled or ‘spirit children’, educating and rehabilitating street children, providing IT skills to increase earnings, micro-finance & income schemes for young street mothers and families to better care for their children, and medical support.

• AfriKids UK provides organisational development & support, process controls, project monitoring, advice and training, and raises funds for AfriKids Ghana.

• AfriKids reaches over 100,000 children and adults a year very cost-effectively.
