AfriKids has the unusual dual strategy of directly developing the local economy as well as the welfare of its child beneficiaries and their families. Its investment in local businesses helps provide future income for the local NGO as well as supporting employment and the local trade prospects of the communities in the area. The charity has several very key corporate and trust donors that currently cover office, publicity, printing, publication, legal and auditing costs. Donated air miles are used where possible for travel to Ghana. Revenues from a medical centre funds 14% of the local charity’s costs.
Funding is required to allow the development of some of the more ambitious projects, however, such as the ecoillage, the medical centre and the ethical trade work. For instance, it is estimated that £3m will be needed to complete the ecovillage, but work will progress in phases as the funds arise.
