MSAVLC relies on appeals to regular donors for the majority of funds. It sends out 1,200 newsletters every three months, attends the World Fair with a stall, hosts garden parties, and publicises its activities locally in newspaper articles and similar low level fundraising. It occasionally benefits from the legacies of long-standing supporters, but also gets new donors who find the charity through word-of-mouth. A Big Lottery Fund proposal in 2008 to support the midwife training programme for 5 years was turned down, as were past corporate appeals. MSAVLC’s Executive Committee is considering ways to develop fundraising economically.
Currently, MSAVLC would like to fund two pieces of anaesthesiology equipment for Vietnam that have been requested, but these will cost £14,000 each to fund and deliver. It has a list of other needs, including equipping a paediatric ward, and microscopes and equipment for eye examinations and surgery. There will inevitably be further specific item requests during the forthcoming project visits.
