Refugees United is a start-up organisation. There is the inherent risk that the idea does not catch on and supporting funds cannot be found to cover costs. We believe that the idea has appeal and should attract attention. There are risks that the costs will not be able to be controlled as well as is planned. Only a few hundred searchers have registered so far, but long term poor uptake is an unlikely risk.
RU is concentrating first on the areas where refugees have easiest internet access. Access may not develop fast enough in other areas for RU to have the desired impact, such as in sub-Saharan Africa.
The system does not physically help families to reunite. But it is the first step towards doing so and then other NGOs could be tapped for financial or organisational reuniting support. It is more effective to increase the number of successful contacts made than to spend NGO funds on fruitless searches.
