Reasons for Rating

• Africa Educational Trust (AET) works in areas affected by conflict to re-establish educational systems. The main country focus is on Somalia/Somaliland and Southern Sudan to help overcome the devastation of the educational system by civil war.

• AET improves the education for children in primary and secondary schools, and helps young people, particularly women, who have missed out on education and training. The aim is to increase literacy and employment opportunities.

• Radio broadcast distance learning programmes help develop literacy as well as enabling young people to get pre-university and university qualifications. An estimated 250,000 listeners are reached.

• Building physical and organisational systems for taking examinations in Somalia benefits not only young people but professionals in nursing, the police, etc.

• Encouraging university level study and qualifications helps young people to become leaders of the future, following in the footsteps of past Trust scholars.

• Training for government & NGO staff helps develop local organisational skills to better serve and benefit communities.

• Support in the UK for people of African origin includes scholarships for university study, and training in advocacy to support community-based organisations.

• Over 183,000 people directly benefited in 2008, for under £15/person.
