Homeless International has naturally close connections with housing associations and building societies in the UK and with the Chartered Institute of Housing. For 15 years, associations have been ‘rounding up’ their affiliation fees to their housing federations in support of Homeless International. To date, this has raised nearly £500,000. The contribution in 2008 amounted to £22,000. But the connection has been under-utilised in the past - a new fundraising manager plans to develop the potential in the housing sector as well as the charity’s national profile. Individuals sponsoring events and making donations for appeals such as for Zimbabwe made up 15% of 2008 income. HI can match every £1 donated to the Zimbabwe Appeal from European statutory sources, multiplying the individual donations. Trek holidays in partner countries also raise individual funds. The majority of funding comes from trusts, foundations and institutions.
HI finds it difficult to encourage donations to the Guarantee Fund which needs expansion to increase its usefulness. There is always a need to fund the embryonic start-up of new partner organisations, and HI hopes to develop relations with 6-8 new partners over the next 5 years. Funding for the Ghana grants are needed to extend partner support in the next financial year.
